Nancy uses her eye for color and design to plan the garden. They work as a team to create their outdoor retreat. Nancy does the sketching and John does the building.

“Gardening to me is about decorating,” Nancy says. “It is extending what you have inside to the outside. It is exterior design.”

Nancy feeds her love of gardening by belonging to the Lunaria League, which organizes the garden tour.

The creative process won’t stop, even though the Soareses have lived in this house for five years. They continue to shift and build upon what they’ve done in previous years. This year’s biggest improvement? A nook John built off the master bedroom, where the couple can sit at a cozy bistro table and enjoy coffee in the morning.

Each year they build on what they have, and Nancy isn’t afraid to try something different each year.
