Home cooks are becoming a threatened species.

Fancy takeaways are the fastest rising meal of choice from restaurants and cafes as busy personal schedules take their toll on home-cooked meals.

The latest cafe, restaurant and catering service industry report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals takeaway meals have grown in popularity three times faster than sit-down meals in restaurants.

Cafes and restaurants raked in an average 6 per cent more each year from eat-in diners in the four years to 2006-07, while takings from takeaway meals jumped an average 18 per cent annually.

Restaurant industry spokeswoman Sally Neville said takeaways had not replaced dining-in, as restaurant customer numbers continued to grow.

“The trend has shown that people are simply cooking less at home,” Ms Neville said.
