Because cold rains and light frosts linger, May promises to offer cooler, wilder weather. Don’t let this craziness quiet your gardening passion. It is time to dig, plant and grow. Here is what you can do now.
PROTECT — Chilly, wet weather hampers the growth of warm-season crops like cucumbers, tomatoes, squash and peppers. Protect with floating row cover to add extra warmth. This white, gauzy material is effective and inexpensive.
PLANT — Late May is a good time to plant corn, summer and winter squash, cucumber, beans and basil. Start an herb garden this month. Sow seeds.
BEWARE — Warm spring days bring out many pests. Bait, trap or hand pick slugs, snails, sowbugs and earwigs. Watch out for the spotted cucumber beetle, Diabrotica undecimpunctata. This little beetle with the big name looks like a green lady bug.
